How does an IPO affect current proportionate ownership in a Company?

Sunday, November 16th, 2008
spider asked:

I understand all they types of IPOs, and the reasons a company would want to go public, but I don’t understand how it affects the current ownership of the company. For example I own 51% of my company and 4 other people own the remaining 49%. How would our proportionate ownership in the company be affected by an IPO, and is it possible for me to keep 51% ownership in my company if I buy enough shares or does that defeat the purpose of an IPO?
